Collage/Notan Art 

 

Students in the Drawing & Painting class (ages 11-14), created Notan art collages using black construction paper and drawing paper. Students were able to explore the possibilities of simplistic design by using limited materials. The goal of this lesson was to help students learn composition through balance and symmetry.

Collage/Color Figure 

 

Students in the Middle School Portfolio Preparation class (ages 11-14), created a collage on manila paper by observing a live model in the classroom. Similar to the silhouette figure lesson, students were encouraged to work standing and be active observers. The goal of this lesson was to help students learn how to see proportion through shape and color of the human position by looking and tearing skin tones and bright colored construction paper simultaneously. They were limited to tear only two pieces for each part of the body to minimize clutter and maximize organization in the overall composition. 

Watercolor & Ink/Flower Still-Life

 

Students in the Middle School Portfolio Preparation class (ages 11-14) created a well-composed flower still-life on watercolor paper. Students went through the steps of transferring what they see from drawing, inking, to painting. They initially used a 4B pencil to plan their composition and lightly sketch the flowers, then they used permanent thin markers to emphasize certain areas of the flowers and the vase. The goal of this lesson was to create an essence of flowers by giving a touch with watercolor in the end. The results show that students let themselves loose and allowed the medium to interact.

Students in the Middle School Portfolio Preparation class (ages 11-14), created a collage by observing a live model in the classroom. They were encouraged to work standing and be active observers. The goal of this lesson was to help students learn how to see proportion through the general form of the human position by looking and tearing black construction paper simultaneously. They were limited to tear only two pieces for each part of the body to bring out the full effect of a silhouette.

Oil Pastel / Fruit Bowl Still-Life

 

Students in the Middle School Portfolio Preparation class (ages 11-14), created drawings of a fruit bowl using oil pastels on colored paper. Students learned how to mix and blend colors thoroughly in order to show an impressionistic effect of the fruit bowl. The goal of this lesson was to help students notice value, light, and shadow through color mixing and careful observation of the fruit bowl still-life.
